Gole dell’Alcantara

Alcantara Gorges are located in the Alcantara Valley in Sicily. Gorges are as high as 25 meters wide and 2 meters in the most narrow and widest points 4-5 meters, the natural canyon, in contrast to popular belief, it was not dug over thousands of years by ‘ water. The most accepted hypothesis is related to seismic events, by a vibrating-tectonic movements they literally split in two old lakes formed by the leakage of basaltic magma from cracks, 300,000 years old, stands of pre-Etna, allowing the water River crept inside. This phenomenon is evidenced by the fact that the structure of the walls (like in some places to “bonfires” and others “columns organ”) is intact and sharp. The Alcantara river flows through lava rock which forms its bed characteristic. On the territory of Motta Camastra Motta Fondaco in place is the most impressive and famous of the Alcantara Gorge, for more than 6 km long but easy way to be covered in the first 3. The particularity of this gorge is the structure of the walls, created by a flow of basaltic lava (low in silica but rich in iron, magnesium and calcium). The lava is then cooled slowly, allowing the creation of pentagonal and hexagonal prismatic shapes that recall the molecular structure of materials that constitute it.
